Ever heard of the phrase “toe rag”? It’s used today as slang for a mischievous person, but its origin is, well, much more vile. Right up until the early 20th century, the toe rag was a length of rope dangled off the side of a ship where the toilet was. It was dangled in the water to keep it clean because it was pulled up by sailors to wipe their rear ends after visiting the toilet. Ew!
