When filming of the first part of the “Lord of the Rings”-trilogy was close to wrapping, Sir Ian, along with his fellow castmates, had the word “nine” in Elvish tattooed on his right shoulder. The nine principal actors had such a great time working on the film that they wanted to do something special to commemorate it.
