Have you heard of the ampersand? You probably haven’t yet you certainly know what it is! The ampersand is the ‘&’ symbol and has been around since the time of Ancient Rome. When Roman scribes wrote ‘et’ they would join up the ‘e’ and the ‘t’ making the ‘&’ symbol. In fact, the ampersand used to be part of the English alphabet. Schoolchildren in the 1800s recited the alphabet adding ‘&’ as the 27th letter after ‘Z’.
