King John of England lived from 1166-1216 but you might be surprised he made it past 1213. On Christmas day that year, he ordered for the festivities 3,000 capons, 1,000 salted eels, 400 hogs and 100 pounds of almonds. Not to be outdone, in 1580 the Christmas feast of Sir William Petrie included 17 oxen, 14 steers, 29 calves, 5 hogs, 13 bucks, 54 lambs, 129 sheep and one ton of cheese. They really seemed to do things bigger back in the day.
