Let’s move onto some more fun and obscure American history. Did you know New York’s original name was New Amsterdam? It was the Dutch that first chose to settle in Manhattan and the name New York only came into being later in the 17th Century after the English captured it. Even today, you can still see plaques of where New Amsterdam’s “wall” was built in 1653—interestingly they are on Wall Street no less!
