The Irish folk song “Bridget Cleary” tells the story of a woman who was supposedly possessed by a witch. The entire village participated in her exorcism, until one day her charred and mutilated corpse was discovered. Bridget’s paranoid husband had showered her with lamp oil a few days after St. Patrick’s Day and set her ablaze. For this he was charged with manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
