The United Federation of Planets was first mentioned in “Star Trek: The Original Series” in the 1967 episode “A Taste of Armageddon”. Prior to that, there were only vague references to “the Federation”. Since many of the classic Trek episodes were allegories to the Cold War, the UFP represented an idealised version of both the UN and NATO.
